Feedback required on degree benchmarks

The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education safeguards quality and standards in UK universities and colleges, so that students have the best possible learning experience. It publishes subject benchmark statements which set out the expectations for the standards of degrees in a range of areas. The statements are subject to regular review with professional, statutory and regulatory bodies and subject associations and networks invited to be involved in the review. The four relevant statements for artists are planned for review as follows:


  • Dance, drama performance - May 2014 to January 2015

  • Art and design; Communication, media, film and cultural studies; Music - January to September 2015


We would like to influence the reviews so that the following wording regarding participatory practice is included IN the relevant benchmark statements:

Narrative

Graduates from degrees in [subject area] may wish to take up employment opportunities where they apply their subject specific skills in a range of participatory settings eg community, youth work, health, criminal justice and education. This kind of work involves the development of contextual understanding and a set of transferable skills all of which will be relevant to any form of employment

Subject-specific knowledge and understanding, attributes and skills

Skills:

Ability to plan, facilitate and evaluate a project which applies aspects of subject expertise in one or more participatory settings.

Knowledge and understanding:

Develop understanding of the ethos, history and contexts for work in participatory settings.
